I ❤️ stations! My honors students had a bunch

I ❤️ stations! My honors students had a bunch of little tasks today in our Fahrenheit 451 unit, so I put them into 6 groups. In our block hour we:
📚 Read “The Pedestrian” and talk about how it inspired conflicts in F451
🔔 Complete bellringers on nonfiction (David Sedaris’ “Me Talk Pretty One Day”) and grammar
🎬Watch a clip from the Michael B. Jordan film version of Fahrenheit 451
📺 Read about LG’s wall-sized TVs and how it reflects issues with Guy and Mildred
🧩 Play literary Jenga, where each piece has a discussion question for literature
📱Watch the short film “I Lost My Phone” and discuss our cell phone usage

I think that stations promote critical thinking, give introverted students more chances to speak, and promote movement in long classes.

Another original one act is done and ready to cast! Nevermore is an exploration of Poe and his works, as well as the macabre reputation he earned after his mysterious death. I pivoted away from comedies this year to embrace a “moodier” vibe (which tends to place better in tournaments). We’re in it to win it this year!

Happy #feetupfriday! Here’s a roundup of what we’re up to in my classes!

📚AP Lit is midway through Frankenstein. Today they had to summarize what we’ve read in the book so far using only emojis (a classic summary lesson I love!)
📘Eng 10 just started reading 12 Angry Men, complete with assigned roles, props, and sitting in configuration.
✍️Honors English 10 is in our thematic unit on disillusionment. Last week we watched The Truman Show. Today we finished “Flowers for Algernon” and had a Socratic discussion on its themes and conflicts.
🗞️Journalism is absolutely RUNNING the joint with reporting on news, student and staff profiles, and sports!

I’m heading out of town this weekend with the ladies of my family and am looking forward to a few weeks of NORMAL coming up!

We also practiced hexagonal thinking by @nowsparkcreativity in our department meeting! It was a first time for many of the teachers in the meeting!
