Silent discussions were a hit! Our regular poem analysis model was getting a bit stale, so I set up a silent discussion on A. E. Housman’s “To an Athlete Dying Young.” Students had two skill-based task cards they could answer at each table and three minutes to comment. When we rotated, the questions and answers stayed, while they moved to the next question. By the time students came full circle, their paper had a series of responses and interpretations to read.
